1 killed, 2 injured in shootout aboard DART train Sunday afternoon, officials say

A gunman killed one person and wounded two others in a shootout Sunday afternoon aboard a DART train, officials said Monday.

At about 4:30 pm Sunday, officers were notified of a shooting on a northbound DART Rail Green Line train near Hatcher Station on Elsie Faye Heggins Street in South Dallas, DART spokesman Gordon Shattles said.

Officers found two people shot at the scene and both were transported to a hospital, where one of them later died, Shattles said. A third person who was grazed by a bullet or injured by shrapnel was treated at the scene and released by emergency crews, she said.

DART officers reviewed surveillance footage of the crash, he said.

“The gunman was shooting wildly, if you will, into the train,” Shattles said.

The two people who survived their injuries were bystanders, Shattles added.

As of 4pm Monday, authorities had not identified any of those involved in the shooting.

Investigators believe the person shot to death disagreed with the accused gunman, who was later arrested by DART police and is facing one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Shattles said.
