Child fatally shot by vehicle while playing outside SW Houston apartment complex

HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating after a 2-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle while playing in front of his family’s apartment building Sunday night.

It happened around 8:00 PM on the 6000 block of Ranchester Drive near Town Park Drive in Southwest Houston.

Detectives said the boy was playing in the parking lot when a red-colored sedan crashed into the boy, running him over. That vehicle took off.

The child was immediately taken to Texas Children’s Hospital, where he died.

Police said the boy’s mother was nearby but did not see the incident.

One person, believed to be the driver of the sedan, was detained for questioning. Police are hoping more witnesses will come forward.

“Right now, we don’t know 100% if that was the person who hit the kid,” said Sgt. D. Rose with the HPD Vehicular Crimes Unit. “So this is part of our investigation now to get photos and as much evidence as possible so we can make sure we have the right person in custody and that justice can be done in this case.”

Anyone with information in this case is encouraged to call the HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Unit at 713-247-4072 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
