Houston-area students invited to “slip into summer reading” with the Houston Astros
HOUSTON – The Houston Astros Foundation and Reliant Energy partnered for the second consecutive year to stop the “summer slide” that happens too often for elementary school students. That’s why they’re excited to kick off the “Slide into Summer Reading” program, which encourages students to become “Trusted Readers” during the school holidays.
The goal is to reach 60,000 reading hours by elementary students in the Greater Houston area this summer. The first 3,000 readers will receive tickets to an Astros home game in August to celebrate their summer reading accomplishments.
To raise awareness and kick off the program, HISD elementary schools will also have the chance to win a “Slide into Summer Party” by signing up the most readers by May 19. The school with the most students enrolled will win an end-of-year party featuring Orbit from the Astros, Hugo from Reliant, Shooting Stars and the Shuttle Crew – plus books, backpacks and prizes for every student.
So students, it’s time to strive for success! Enjoy a good book, fall in love with reading and get a great reward for doing so. What can be better?
