Woman killed while driving in a storm after a tree fell on her vehicle in the spring

SPRINGTIME, Texas — Monday night storms killed a woman driving in the Spring area after a tree fell on her vehicle.

The fatal crash occurred near the intersection of East Cypresswood and Whitewood just east of the North Freeway. Neighbors’ cell phone video captured the winds whipping through the area around 6:30pm on Monday.

“This is a truly unfortunate event. Something no one really could have seen coming,” Precinct 4 Captain Jonathan Zitzmann said at the scene. “It is a very tragic event and our hearts break for her and her family.”

The woman was the only person inside the car and was dead when first responders arrived on the scene, Zitzmann said.

“It is a very large tree. Very strong wind. Very heavy rain. There were several people who got stuck in traffic. There have been no reports of lightning strikes,” Zitzmann said. “Once we are able to remove the tree, we will be able to identify whether the vehicle was parked or in gear or if one’s foot was on the brake at the time. “

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward to help them figure out what happened, as none of them remained at the scene.

Officials have not yet identified the crash victim.

Loud storm and emergency response caused neighbors to rush out.

“Tons of rain, wind, you know? Branches gone crazy, people’s belongings flying all over the place,” said Hever Capote, who lives across the street from where it happened. ‘As quickly as he came, he was gone.’

Branches were down throughout the neighborhood and many were still without electricity in the area as of 10pm on Monday.

Zitzmann said emergency crews also responded to a tree inside a home in Atascocita on Monday night. All occupants have been reported safe, he said.
