Police said a man has been arrested in connection with the death of his child in the northeast part of the city.

SAN ANTONIO – A father is in custody after the San Antonio police said an argument between him and his girlfriend led to the murder of their 8-month-old baby.

According to the SAPD, Alejandro Martinez has been charged with bodily harm to a child – serious bodily harm – and was taken into custody on Saturday.

The charge relates to an incident that occurred on April 12 at the Merida Apartments in the 2100 block of the 410 northeast ring.

Police said the baby’s parents, one of whom is Martinez, were arguing when he fired a gun, injuring the baby and her 21-year-old mother. Both were taken to a district hospital, where the child died from his injuries, SAPD reports.

The child’s mother was discharged from the hospital and later arrested in connection with the child’s death.

On Saturday, she was identified by the SAPD as Ruby Maura, who is also charged with bodily harm to a child — serious bodily harm, according to Bexar County court records.

After the shooting, Martinez went into hiding from the authorities. Eventually, detectives managed to track him down to a motel in the 11500 block of IH-35 North, where he was arrested without incident.

In addition to the injury inflicted on the child, Martinez also faced bail violations for assault.

We will add more updates to this case as soon as they become available.
